Beginning Wednesday, January 27, accounting majors from the West Virginia University Institute of Technology’s Department of Finance and Accounting will be assisting elderly, disabled and low income clients from local communities with the preparation of their 2010 federal and state income tax forms.
In coordination with the Internal Revenue Service, WVU Tech is again participating in the Volunteer Income Tax Program (VITA). The goal of VITA is to provide service to the community and enhance student knowledge of personal income taxes. Students participating in this program have received training to prepare taxes and have been certified by the IRS (having passed the IRS proficiency exam). All returns prepared by students will be reviewed before submission to the IRS.
Students will be available to meet with clients on Wednesday afternoons beginning January 27 through April 14 from 12:30 pm to 5:30 pm at the Montgomery Public Library at 507 Ferry Street. In order to qualify for assistance through the VITA program, clients must be low income or elderly or disabled who are receiving benefits.
Clients are requested to bring their social security cards or a letter from the Social Security Administration with their ID number, for themselves, spouses and any dependents, along with a picture ID for the tax payer and spouse if filing jointly. Clients must also bring their W2’s and any other tax documentation. Resident aliens must bring their ITIN information.
