WVU Tech Upward Bound receives $1.8 million in funding

West Virginia University Institute of Technology has been selected to receive more than $1.8 million to fund the Upward Bound (UB) program. A TRIO program, UB provides support for high school participants in their precollege performance, and ultimately, in their higher education pursuits.

Thanks to the support of Congressman Nick Rahall, Senator Jay Rockefeller, and Senator Joe Manchin, WVU Tech will receive $378,902 for the upcoming year to support the on-campus Upward Bound program. It is anticipated that these funds will be renewed for a total of five years totaling more than $1.8 million in support.

“We are excited about this funding, without which we would not be able to continue serving our students. Our students’ success is built on the foundation of this program,” said Jennifer Bunner, WVU Tech’s Upward Bound Director.

This funding will enable the UB program to continue its services including academic instruction, counseling, tutoring and follow-up meetings on the WVU Tech campus. WVU Tech’s program serves 90 participants in the following local high schools: Clay County, Fayetteville, Meadow Bridge, Midland Trail, Oak Hill, Riverside and Valley.

WVU Tech’s Dean of Students Richard Carpinelli explained, “We are grateful for the opportunity to continue our services for these students.”
